Lyrical Classes
In this class a combination of ballet, jazz and contemporary is used to challenge dancers to use movement to interpret music and express emotion. Through the interpretation of music and its lyrics, a story is often told through the movement, in either a literal or an abstract way. It includes a combination of intricate, highly technical, and naturalistic moves. A range from fluid and soft to sharp and detailed movement is present during a lyrical class. Lyrical classes place a large amount of focus on emotion and performance quality while dancing. In the advanced levels there is an emphasis placed on an individuals approach to create a mood in the dance through emotion.
Lyrical classes begin with a warm-up of the entire body through ballet-like movements, stretching and strengthening exercises. Special attention to back exercises are made due to the importance of details of movement in the back during lyrical combinations. When students are warm, across the floor progressions, such as battements, turns, and leaps, are practiced. Later in class a center combination is taught. Center combinations are an opportune time for dancers to practice showing emotion and telling a story through movement. In our advanced levels, students are occasionally given the opportunity to learn improvisation and choreography skills. This grants the dancers a chance for creative self-expression.
Vibe Dance Studio offers eight levels of Lyrical and students are placed based on age and ability. Lyrical classes are offered to students age 7 and older and have a requirement of concurrent enrollment in a Ballet class at Vibe Dance Studio.
