Contemporary Classes
Contemporary dance classes at Vibe Dance Studio incorporate skills from modern, lyrical, ballet and jazz dance techniques. In this class students learn a variety of floor work, partnering and improvisation skills. Through a wide range of styles, students will explore spatial awareness along with dynamics of movement and rhythm while working towards increased strength, flexibility and efficient alignment.
Contemporary class begins with a warm-up, typically integrating the Basic 6 principles of Bartenieff Fundamentals and Graham based technique principles of contraction/release, spiral and weight shifting . The class progresses to include standing exercises that increase the students strength, flexibility and technical skills. At this point they will work on moving in an anatomically correct way. Later, the class includes across the floor progressions and center combinations in which students get to explore many types of movement qualities, such as breath, suspension, collapse, pathways and even pedestrian movements. At certain times of the year students will learn performance piece choreography. In this class the students study movement of many historical dance figures and the 5 Principles of Dance: Space, Body, Time, Dynamics and Relationship. A large portion of beginning and intermediate levels focus on correct ways of moving into and out of floor work. In the advanced levels, creativity and expression of individual is encouraged. Students will gain a variety of skill sets.
Contemporary is offered to ages 9 and older with instructor permission. Concurrent enrollment in Ballet at Vibe Dance Studio is required.
