National Training Curriculum

The AMERICAN BALLET THEATRE® National Training Curriculum, is a breakthrough 8 level program that combines high quality artistic training with the basics of dancer health and child development. The ABT® National Training Curriculum consists of a comprehensive set of age-appropriate, outcome-based guidelines to provide the highest quality training to dance students of all ages and skill levels.

Ballet students have the opportunity to study the ABT program and participate in the annual student exams. Students who successfully pass the exam for their level of training will receive a certificate of accomplishment and recognition by ABT. Examination participants will also benefit from special ABT membership programs including early notification of ABT Summer Intensive auditions and other ABT events. Class placement is based on a combination of technical ability, previous experience, and age, and is at the discretion of the ballet instructors and Director. All ballet students are evaluated annually for advancement, regardless of exam participation. New students will be evaluated during their placement week; the first week they take class at the studio.

Vibe Dance Studio is proud to include ABT® Affiliate Teacher Ballet Director Rachel Cutforth and ABT® Certified Teacher Angela Robinson within its Ballet Department teaching faculty.  An ABT® Affiliate Teacher is a level of distinction for ABT® Certified Teachers who successfully present their students for examinations.

Ballet Exams

Each examination year, selected students are entered for ABT Examinations. These examinations are held throughout the world and are conducted by official ABT Examiners who provide teachers and students with a written evaluation of student’s technical and artistic skill, physical and cognitive facility, as well as progressive and necessary improvements.

Why Vibe Participates in ABT Exams:

When students participate in the ABT examinations, they have attained a high standard in ballet. This sometimes has far-reaching benefits for the future, including advantages for college admission as well as the pursuit of ballet teaching credentials. ABT National Training Curriculum Examiners are internationally recognized teachers who themselves use the ABT National Training Curriculum in their own teaching. Examinations take place in the Spring quarter of any given examination year. Results of these assessments will then be sent by him/her to NYC where they are monitored and issued officially.  Score sheets and certificates are then issued to the school for distribution to students. Exams set a high standard in balletic training and by participating we are held accountable for the performance of our students. We desire to provide the best possible classical ballet education and exams provide students with a measurement of their facility and ability in comparison to large balletic school students across the globe.

Exams provide students with:

  • An achievable goal to work towards
  • Recognition from the country’s National Ballet Company
  • The impetus to achieve their personal best in a fun and nurturing environment

Each student is marked against a set of assessment criteria specific to the level in which they test.

Who is eligible to participate in an ABT Exam?

Any student who achieves a high technical standard and meets the minimum enrollment criteria is eligible to enter an ABT Exam. The Ballet Director will determine whether a student is entered for an Exam based on a variety of factors including technical ability, maturity, mastery and memorization of the exam material etc.

Are there any additional requirements for students entering Exams?

If additional requirements are necessary, these will be announced as we approach the exam date. Private lessons may also be allowed at the discretion of the Ballet Director.
